I call it wall art as I don’t think you can liken this creativity and artistic expression to graffiti. You certainly see graffiti all over the city. It is an expression. But I wanted to focus this post more on some of the art and murals that can be found on display around the city.
Elements of the city looks hard. Security bars and barbed wire almost everywhere. Everything is made of concrete. Sometimes weathered, broken, or decayed. Walls everywhere. They provide a form of protection or deterrent. At times walls also provide a canvas to display art, creativity, and culture. A chance to showcase talented and creative people. It gives a sense of expression to a city. A visual respite.
You will see murals and wall art quite often in Mexico. Sometimes on public and government buildings. A lot of it is government sponsored. As I discover more of this art I will do a more detailed write up on the history and roots of Mexican muralism.
For now I wanted to show a little of what I have found along my wanders in this city. Some of these images will be familiar to regular followers from previous posts.
It is not always paint that is used as art on walls. Below is an installation at a school made of mosaic tiles.
Wow. These truly are works of art. I love how these types of murals spring up more and more everywhere. :)
